hMG / Menotropins: Mixtures, Activity & Identity
Reference check: 7 October 2026
Understand why menotropins are characterized by biological activities and why they should not be described as one small, pure peptide.
hMG is a gonadotropin preparation with defined activities, not a single synthetic peptide sequence.
What hMG refers to
Human menopausal gonadotropin, often abbreviated hMG, is discussed as menotropins. A labeled medicine example is a purified gonadotropin preparation with follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing-hormone activity.
The source and purification history are part of the material description. Official MENOPUR labeling supplies information about one specific preparation. It should not be used to infer that every material labeled hMG has identical composition or quality. [1]
An activity label is not a simple ingredient count
FSH activity and LH activity describe functional properties measured or assigned according to relevant standards. They are not a substitute for understanding which molecules contribute to those activities in a preparation.
This matters when comparing a mixture with isolated recombinant hormones. A biological activity ratio does not automatically reveal the mass ratio of pure FSH and pure LH. The assay and specification establish the meaning of the reported units.
Research comparisons need careful documentation
If a study compares gonadotropin preparations, look for the source, activity basis and analytical characterization. Glycoprotein properties can make these materials more complex to describe than a short synthetic chain.
Changes in a receptor-associated readout need to be interpreted against the full preparation. Without that context, a difference may reflect activity, composition or another property of the mixture rather than one isolated molecular mechanism.
Keep clinical and laboratory information separate
A licensed medicine's labeling applies to that formulation and its regulated clinical context. It does not authenticate a research product or supply an appropriate personal-use protocol for one.
This article explains terminology and measurement. It does not provide fertility-treatment instructions, convert activity units into a universal mass value or claim that catalog placement beside peptides makes hMG one defined peptide.
Questions to bring to the evidence
- Does the report describe biological activity, chemical amount or both?
- Which molecules contribute to the stated LH activity in this preparation?
